The small print
Ordering terms
Byte & Batter is one small kitchen, not a shop with a till. These are the plain-English ground rules so we both know where we stand.
Placing an order
Orders are taken by message on Instagram at @byte.batter. Tell me what you want, how much of it, and the day and time you need it.
Nothing is booked until I have replied to confirm it. A message that has been sent but not answered is a request, not an order — please wait for the confirmation before you count on it, especially for an event.
Notice periods
- Fried items, including puff puff: at least one hour, because the batch is made from scratch once you order.
- Loaves, muffins and cookies: usually same-day notice, subject to what is already in the oven.
- Celebration cakes and party batches: considerably longer. Message me with your date and I will tell you what is realistic.
Busy weekends and holidays fill up, so earlier is always better.
Prices and payment
The prices on this site are the current menu prices and include everything unless I say otherwise. Prices for custom cakes and event catering are quoted individually, because they depend on size, flavour and numbers.
Payment is arranged with me directly when I confirm your order, and I will tell you the total and the payment options before anything is baked. Large orders and event bookings may need a deposit to hold the date — I will say so at the time of quoting, not afterwards.
Collection and delivery
Collection is local, in Stratford and Newham, London E15. I send the exact pickup point when your order is confirmed. Please arrive within the agreed window: fried food is at its best in the first hour, and I have no shop counter to keep it on.
Local delivery can sometimes be arranged, usually for larger orders. Ask when you order and I will tell you whether it is possible and what it costs.
Posting sea moss gel
The sea moss gel is the only product that ships. It goes anywhere in the UK for a flat £4.50 by Royal Mail Tracked 24, and I use the 24-hour service on purpose so the gel arrives cold rather than sitting in a depot.
Every jar is made fresh for the order rather than taken off a shelf, so I will agree a dispatch day with you when I confirm it and tell you once it has gone out. Because the gel is perishable, I will avoid posting it into a weekend if that would leave your parcel sitting in a depot.
Tracked 24 is a target, not a guarantee, and once a parcel is with Royal Mail its timing is out of my hands. If it is delayed, message me and I will chase it with you. If it arrives spoiled or damaged, tell me within 24 hours with a photo and I will replace or refund it.
Because the gel is fresh, perishable food made to order, it is exempt from the usual 14-day right to change your mind under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. That does not affect your rights if something arrives faulty, spoiled or not as described.
The bakes do not post. Fried and iced items are only good fresh, so they stay local pickup.
Changes and cancellations
Plans change — tell me as soon as you know. If the ingredients have not been bought and the baking has not started, changing or cancelling is usually no trouble at all.
Once a batch is mixed, a cake is started, or shopping has been done specifically for your event, I may not be able to refund the full amount, because the cost has already gone out. I will always tell you exactly where your order stands and what is fair before anything is decided. Where a deposit has been taken for an event, what happens to it is whatever we agreed when the booking was made.
If I ever have to cancel on you — illness, an oven failure, something genuinely outside my control — you get everything you have paid back in full, and as much notice as I can give you.
If something is not right
Tell me on the day. Send a message, and a photo if you can. If something has gone wrong with an order I have made, I will put it right, either by remaking it or by refunding it. Nothing in these terms takes away your legal rights as a consumer under UK law.
Allergies and food safety
Please read the allergen information before ordering, and tell me about any allergy before you place an order rather than with it. Everything is baked in a home kitchen that handles gluten, eggs, dairy, nuts, sesame and soya, so no item can be guaranteed free from traces.
Once your order is handed over, keeping it safe is down to you. As a rule of thumb: fried items are at their best eaten the same day; anything with fresh cream or cream cheese needs to go straight in the fridge and be eaten within a couple of days; sea moss gel lives in the fridge and wants a clean, dry spoon each time, while the recovery cubes belong in the freezer; and honey should never be given to children under 12 months old. If you are not sure how to store something, ask me when you collect it or when it arrives.
Photographs
I sometimes photograph orders for the Instagram feed. If you would rather I did not photograph or post your cake or your event, just say so and I will not.
These terms
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If any part of them turns out not to be enforceable, the rest still stands. If they change, the date below changes with them.
