Allergen information

Byte & Batter is a home bakery. That is part of the charm, and it is also why allergen information here works differently to a factory-packed product — please read this before you order.

Everything is baked in a single home kitchen that handles cereals containing gluten, eggs, milk, tree nuts, peanuts, sesame and soya.

Because the same worktops, ovens, bowls and frying oil are used for every batch, no item can be guaranteed free from traces of any allergen — even where a recipe does not call for it. If you have a diagnosed allergy or coeliac disease, please take that seriously when deciding whether to order.

Tell me before you order

Send a message with the allergy named clearly before you place an order, not with the order itself. I will tell you exactly what goes into the item you are asking about and give you an honest answer about whether I can make it safely for you. If the answer is no, I would rather say so.

What is in the regular menu

The table below is a guide based on the published ingredients for each item. Recipes change with the season and with what is available, so always confirm at the time of ordering — the answer you get in a message is the one that counts.

Occasional and seasonal bakes

  • Sweet potato, pistachio & chocolate brownie — contains tree nuts (pistachio) and chocolate.
  • Almond-flour lemon cake — contains tree nuts (almond), eggs and milk (whipping cream, cream cheese).
  • Pumpkin cinnabuns — contain cereals containing gluten and milk (cream cheese icing).

Sea moss gel

The sea moss line is made separately from the bakes, and none of the three products contain gluten, dairy, egg or nut ingredients. They are still prepared in the same home kitchen, so the cross-contamination note at the top of this page applies to them too.

Product Made from Worth knowing
Premium Gold Sea Moss Gel Wildcrafted St. Lucia sea moss, alkaline water, fresh organic lemon Seaweed — iodine
Premium Green Superfood Gel As above, plus key lime and green superfoods Seaweed — iodine; ask for the full superfood blend
Savage Recovery Ice Cubes Sea moss gel, frozen into portions Seaweed — iodine

Sea moss is a seaweed, not a crustacean or a mollusc, so it is not one of the fourteen regulated allergens. It is worth flagging anyway if you avoid sea products, or if you are watching your iodine intake — sea moss is naturally high in it. If you have a thyroid condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take any medication, speak to your doctor before adding sea moss to your diet. Ask me for the full ingredient list of the green superfood blend before ordering if you react to anything.

Honey, infants and herbal ingredients

Several bakes are sweetened with honey. Honey should not be given to children under 12 months old.

The Mindful Cookies contain ashwagandha, a herb traditionally used to support rest and energy. It is food, not medicine, and nothing on this site is a health claim or medical advice. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, taking any medication, or managing a thyroid or autoimmune condition, please speak to your doctor or pharmacist before eating products containing herbal ingredients.

The 14 regulated allergens

For reference, UK law names fourteen allergens that food businesses must be able to tell you about: celery, cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, lupin, milk, molluscs, mustard, peanuts, sesame, soya, sulphur dioxide and sulphites, and tree nuts. Ask me about any of them and you will get a straight answer.
